TEACHING EXPERIENCE
SOCIAL INEQUALITY
Instructor of Record, Fall 2019 (in-person); Fall 2020 & Spring 2021 (online, synchronous), Department of Sociology, Indiana University
“Who gets what and why?” In this course, we explore why some people have more than others. We look at power, status, and advantages given to certain individuals. We study how organizations, neighborhoods, and social networks influence people’s opportunities and outcomes based on factors like income, race, and gender. Throughout the course, we focus on understanding and addressing social inequalities. [Course Syllabus – PDF]
UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH PROGRAM
Co-Liaison, 2021-2022, Center for Research on Race & Ethnicity in Society (CRRES), Indiana University
I co-taught the Undergraduate Research Program at CRRES, which provides students and their mentors with structure and guidelines to complete a research project. Throughout the year, students attended workshops to learn academic skills such as writing an annotated bibliography and using academic databases. I mentored 4 students and met regularly to discuss their ongoing progress in preparation for their poster presentation. [Link to 2021-2022 URP Projects]
STUDENT TESTIMONIALS
I really enjoyed the readings and podcasts, and the lectures were always quite interesting.
— Student, Spring 2021
I loved everything about this course and Prof. Garcia has been one of the best instructors I’ve ever had in the fifteen years of school I’ve had. She truly cares about her students. She always tries to motivate us to do our best.

The podcasts that Ms.Garcia picks for weekly learning materials are definitely interesting. She would sometimes put memes in her lecture slides, which brought joy to the class. Online classes through zoom are new to most of us, I myself was a little overwhelmed by the new teaching style at the beginning of the semester, afraid that I might not learn much compare to an in–person class. However, Ms.Garcia did a fantastic job in teaching us through Zoom and Canvas. She cares about the well–being of her students.
— Student, Fall 2020
I loved how it was always interesting and very relatable. I was always engaged in the class and the discussion was always very interesting and easy to stay engaged in. Instructor Garcia used many real life scenarios and demonstrations that we participated in in–class in order to help us understand concepts.
